U.S. Veteran Charles Lamar Ogle, Jr., age 64, of Newport passed away late Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Newport Medical Center surrounded by immediate family. A Newport native and graduate of Cocke County High School, he served our country in Vietnam as a member of the 86th Signal Battalion and the 27th Infantry Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division where he received rifle sharpshooter award and the Bronze Star. After honorable discharge from the military, he attended Carson-Newman College and was a member of the 1968 and 1969 football teams. A talented athlete, he remained involved with sports for over twenty-five years with TSSAA as a basketball and football referee. Charlie’s career began in community and economic development with the Knoxville Community Development Corporation, and later as Codes Enforcement Officer and Community Development Coordinator for the City of Newport. He later became a local business man, and later managed and operated two Newport apartment complexes. Charlie was a long-time member of Webb Baptist Church. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Newport Lodge #234. Charlie was devoted to his family, a tireless provider of comfort, support, and love, always seeming to place the needs of others ahead of his own. Proceeded in death by parents, Charles Lamar and Della Ford Ogle of Newport, and father- and mother-in-law, Roy D. and Viola Brown of Cosby; brother, Don Ogle and sister-in-law Lois Ogle. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Thelma Brown Ogle; children James Eric (Jayne) Ogle, Amanda Beth (Jerry) Vandergriff, and Abby Nicole (Clinton) Provencal; grandchildren, Madeline, Lillian and Grace Ogle, Chloe and Noah Vandergriff, and Evan Provencal; siblings Jimmy (Susan) Ogle of Salisbury, North Carolina, Frances (the late Fleete) McCurdy of Winter Springs, Florida, sister Jackie (Jerry) Holt of Newport, and sister Terri (Harold) Lewis of Newport, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 7pm followed by a Celebration of Life at 7pm at Brown’s Funeral Home in Newport. Dr. Frank Bell and Rev. Scott Gorrell will officiate. On Wednesday family and friends will gather at Brown’s Funeral Home for a procession at 11am to proceed to Union Cemetery for graveside services with full military honors conferred by the National Guard. Brown Funeral Home is honored to serve the Ogle family.
