RIDENOUR, BESSIE LEE WOOD - age 99 of Newport, TN., formerly of the Medford Community in Lake City, TN, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2005 at the home of her daughter in Newport, TN. She was born June 21, 1905 in Campbell County, TN., in the Agee Community, now covered by waters of the Norris Dam. She was a member of Lake City United Methodist Church. She was a member of W.M.U. and the Medford F.C.E. She was a craft person, doing rug hooking, bottoming chairs with corn shucks, and making hats out of corn shucks. She made old fashioned bonnets, and did crocheting and quilting. She loved gardening, and enjoyed canning and freezing the produce she raised. She sold craft items to a craft shop at the Museum of Appalachia, the Community Craft Center on Hwy 61, and to craft stores in New York and Asheville, North Carolina.
She is preceded in death by: her husband of 53 years, O.G. (Gip) Ridenour; daughter, Opal Houchin of Raleigh, NC; 2 sons, George, two and one half years old, & William RIdenour; parents, William R. & Lucy May Irwin Wood; 4 sisters, Margaret Davis, Mabel Bolinger, Dorothy Vowell, and Ammone Miller; two brothers, J. Will Wood & Sam Wood; and son-in-law, Vernon Houchin.
Survivors: daughter, Nona & husband, William Agee, Newport, TN; daughter-in-law, Imo Jean RIdenour, Lake City, TN; grandchildren, Ella Lee & husband Gary Ford, Newport TN, Judy & husband Glenn Smith, Atlanta, GA, Tommy Houchin & wife Barbara, Nashville, TN, Eddy Houchin & wife Jane, Raleigh, NC, Terry Ridenour & wife Sandy, Lake City, TN, James Agee & wife, Terri, Morristown, TN; great grandchildren, Molly Ford, Lee, Greg, Joe, Charlie & Abby Houchin, Alex & Bradley Ridenour, Michele Cauthen; many nieces and nephews and friends.
Visitation 2:00 pm Saturday, March 12, 2005 at the Lake City United Methodist Church. Funeral services 2:00 pm Saturday, March 12, 2005 at the Lake City United Methodist Church with Rev. Brenda Poole officiating. Interment to follow funeral service at the Norris Memorial Gardens in Norris, TN. Hatmaker Funeral Home of Lake City in charge of arrangements.
