John McConkey, owner, operator and chief pilot of Knoxville Flight Training Center at Downtown Island Airport, died Monday at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Mr. McConkey, 68, died of lymphoma.
"He was a pilot for over 30 years," said his wife, Rebecca McConkey. "His greatest love was flying."
He owned the flight training school for 14 years and bought it from his brother, Bob McConkey, who owned the school for about 25 years.
Mr. McConkey was from Knoxville, attended Central High School and attended UT for two years, then joined the Air National Guard, serving for three years.
His wife said he had three careers.
His family owned McConkey Drug Store on Clinton Highway, and Mr. McConkey owned Powell Valley Drug Store in the 1960s and 1970s.
"He ran the store in Powell and worked with the pharmacists," Rebecca McConkey said.
Next, Mr. McConkey was a professional photographer and owned Photos Unlimited on Kingston Pike in Bearden in the late 1970s and 1980s.
"Then he went into the flying business," his wife said. "Before that it was a hobby. Then, it was a career.
Mr. McConkey was a member of Fellowship Church on Middlebrook Pike and enjoyed weekly Bible studies in his home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Laury Hembree of Maryville, his son, John Edward McConkey II of Knoxville, and his brother, Bob McConkey of Knoxville.
