Deceased Name: Frank Huskey, elephant keeper at Knoxville Zoo, dies -- Frank Huskey, elephant keeper at Knoxville Zoo, dies
Frank Dee Huskey of Sevierville, longtime handler of elephants at the Knoxville Zoo, died Friday. He was 65.
"Frank was an institution here," said the zoo's executive director, Pat Roddy. "He was the person who looked after our elephants all these years. His love for those animals was something you would have to see. He will be missed by all of us and by the elephants. They will notice he is gone, and they will grieve."
Mr. Huskey worked for the zoo from 1964 through 1968 and returned in 1972. He retired earlier this year but continued working part time to train his replacement.
"I love 'em," Mr. Huskey told a News-Sentinel reporter in 1989 while talking of his work with elephants. "I don't know why; I just love 'em to death."
Mr. Huskey saw his first elephant at a small zoo in Pigeon Forge when he was 17. He later went to work at that zoo as a mechanic and carpenter, but he became familiar with the zoo's elephants and carefully studied the elephant show's routine.
One day when the employee in charge of the elephant show missed work, Mr. Huskey took his place without a hitch.
Over the years, he gave elephant rides to thousands of children at the Knoxville Zoo. Many of them returned to the zoo as adults and brought their own children for an elephant ride under Mr. Huskey's supervision.
He was known for his ability to handle "Ole Diamond," the famous elephant given to the zoo by the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus because the circus considered the animal too difficult to handle.
Mr. Huskey is survived by his wife, Jessie Quarrels Huskey; son, Thomas Huskey; stepson, Danny England; stepdaughters Nancy Seibers, Wanda Leabow; two grandsons; one great-grandson; four stepgrandsons; three stepgranddaughters; five step-great-grandchildren; brothers Don Huskey, Burl Huskey, Larry Huskey, John Huskey; and sisters Billie Helton, Stella Hurst, Ella Murphy, Margie Clinton and Betty Jo Ellis.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Little Cove Cemetery.
