WALKER, PAULINE SHIELDS - age 97, of Newport, passed away Monday, May 14, 2001. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.A.P. Shields. She was the widow of Edward R. Walker. She was preceded in death by her son, Edward R. Walker, Jr. and daughters-in-law, Martha S. Walker, Margaret W. Walker and Anne R. Walker. She retired as Librarian of Stokely Memorial Library, Newport, in 1990 at the age of 87, after 26 years. She was an Alumna of Salem College, a charter member of the William Cocke Chapter, NSDAR, and the oldest member of the First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are son, the Rev. Paul Shields Walker of Knoxville; grandchildren, Sherrod and John West of Tampa, Fla., Eddie and Cindy Walker of Newport, Ginni and Frank Foust of Knoxville, Stephen and Shala Walker of McMinnville, John Walker of Hilton Head, S.C., Mark and Carole Walker of Lebanon, Tenn., and Julia W. Perez of Clarksville, Tenn.; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ila S. Remine of State Collage, Penn., and Wilma S. Penland, of Richmond, Va. Memorial services will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 19 at 11 .a.m. with the Rev. Riley Huffstetler and Dr. Charles W. Starks officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Stokely Memorial Library or the First United Methodist Church Music Fund.
