A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK
Alfred Bosworth
The son of one of Kane county's most successful pioneers, Alfred Bosworth displayed all the business skills and foresight of his father, Increase C. Bosworth. Increase started as a real estate developer and merchant in the Dundee area, moved to Elgin where he became a leading merchant and banker and became regarded as Kane county's leading financier.
Alfred Bosworth was born in Dundee on April 1st, 1846. He attended local and private schools and the University of Chicago from which he graduated in 1865. He joined the dry-goods firm of I. C. Bosworth and George M. Peck continuing there until he became a partner in the private banking firm of Bosworth, Carpenter & Company. The other partners were his father and Julius A. Carpenter. Alfred assumed the management of the new business and, in 1876, bought the controlling interest in the First National Bank of Elgin and the Elgin City Banking Company.
As manager of the joint enterprises, Alfred managed the largest banking business in the county, He inaugurated a safe, conservative policy which contributed in large part to the success of the institution. It was considered one of the most reliable banking firms in Northern Illinois.
On September 10th of 1873, Alfred was married to Eleanora Wheeler and they had six children, four girls and two boys. He had a great interest in farming and from time to time made extensive investments in farm land, especially dairy farms, and he was considered an authority on many phases of farming and dairying during the period when Elgin was a great diary center.
He withdrew from active management of the Elgin City Banking Company in 1890 and from the First National Bank in 1905 although he continued as a director. Alfred served for many years as a trustee of the University of Chicago and as treasurer of the city of Elgin. He and his family enjoyed traveling and engaging in their agricultural pursuits during an active retirement. Alfred was always regarded as a man of integrity and honesty and was known for his keen discernment in business affairs. His advise was sought after and it was said he regarded the respect and esteem of his fellow citizens as more preferable than wealth, fame or position.
