Mr. Samuel D. Peek, of Calhoun, died Wednesday September 6, 2006 in Fort Oglethorpe after several months of declining health.
He was born on February 28, 1923 in Randolph County, Alabama and was the son of the late Judson and Mae Burrows Peek. He was preceded in death by a son, David L. Peek, by brothers; John, Kermit, William and Joseph and by sisters Emily Presswood and Polly Head. He was a veteran of World War II serving three years in the European Theater with the 1St.Army Division under General George Patton. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Carson Newman College with a history major and a Bible minor. Entering the field of education where he served for 35 years, he earned a Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee and an Educational Specialtist Degree from West Georgia College. His employment in education included Jackson County, Alabama and the Chattanooga City Schools prior to moving to Calhoun in 1967 where he served 17 years as principal and administrative assistant to the superintendent. He also served with the Calhoun-Gordon County Educators Credit Union (Lockheed), in the education associations, as coordinator of the special education and as president of the Retired Teachers Association. He was dedicated to his church, serving as a deacon at Ridgeview and Central Baptist in Chattanooga and at First Baptist Church in Calhoun. He has been active in Calhoun First United Methodist Church for more than 25 years. He served on the Administrative Board, Evangelism Committee, as a Sunday School Teacher , and as a volunteer in other areas. He became an active Gideon in Chattanooga and became active in the Rome Camp upon moving to Calhoun. He was instrumental in organizing the camp in Calhoun where he remained active.
Sam is survived by Pauline H. Peek , his wife of 54 years, by a son and daughter-in-law; Dale and Stephanye Peek of Marietta, and grandchildren Johathan and Joshua Peek. Sisters surviving incude Betty Silver of Henagar, Alabama , and Jean Wellshear of Wichita, Kansas. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday Sept. 9th. at the Calhoun First United Methodist Church with Dr. Brian Clark, Dr. John Bledsoe, Rev. Larry Burgess and Rev. W.A. Galyon officiating. Burial will follow in the Chandler Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Ted Arnold, Jimmy Hodges, Al Edwards, Jimmy Prater, Bremon Peek and Jimmy Silver and they are asked to meet at the Thomas Funeral Home at 1:30 P.M. Saturday. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church, members and auxillary members of Gideon’s International and members of the Gordon/Calhoun Retired Teachers Association, and those of the Calhoun City School System and they are asked to meet at the Church at 1:45 P.M. Saturday.
The family will receive friends at the Thomas Funeral Home from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday evening.
