Eugene Norris “Amos” Large, age 77, a lifelong resident of Pigeon Forge, died suddenly on August 16, 2007, at Ft. Sanders Sevier Medical Center. Amos was born in Pigeon Forge on July 22, 1930, to Melvin and Martha (Stinnett) Large. He attended Sevier County schools, graduating from Sevier County High School in 1948. A veteran of the United States Army, he ran the family farm for several years and then worked for 28 years for the Tennessee D.O.T. prior to retiring in 1990.
Amos was an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, UT sports and spending time with his family and friends. Amos was always ready to lend a hand in community volunteer efforts. He was a long-time member of the Great Smoky Mountains Shrine Club, for which he chaired the annual Shrine paper sale for several years and transported dozens of children to various Shrine hospitals. He also volunteered weekly at the Sevier County Food Ministry and was a devoted team member at the Sevier County Relay for Life.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Betty, in October of 2006, his parents, a sister Jessie Large Sims, and three brothers, Herman, Dave and Rex. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Amy Large, and two grandchildren who were his absolute pride and joy, Meghan (David) Rasnake and David Large. Other survivors: brother R.C. (Mildred) Large, sisters-in-law, Georgia (Joe) Freels and Margaret Etherton. He will also be missed by a host of friends and relatives, especially his niece Brenda (Joe) Rudder and nephew Larry (Carolyn) Sims and his special friends Gary and Edna Kimble, Larry and Cheryl Burcham, George and Helen Worsham, and Art and Rebekah Atchison.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, c/o Cheryl Burcham, BankEast, 901 Parkway, Sevierville, TN 37862 or to First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg, 111 Oglewood Lane, Gatlinburg, TN 37738.
A celebration of his life will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, August 20, at First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg with receiving of friends from 5 – 7 p.m. The Reverend Larry Burcham will officiate. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
