LAYMAN, JAMES RAY - 86, of Athens, died Friday morning, June 11, 2010, at Woods Memorial Hospital. A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Gilford and Clio Hutsell Layman and was also preceded in death by his first wife Sue Turner Layman, and two sisters, Ruth L. Walker and Joyce L. Murphy. He was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as Church treasurer and served on various other committees of the church. He was a respected Farmer and Dairyman in McMinn, Monroe, and Polk Counties, he owned and farmed the land where the McMinn County High School now stands, and also a portion of the Athens Regional Park property where a building is named in his honor. He was instrumental in founding the Valley Farmers Coop in 1947, and served on the board for many years. He was selected as McMinn County Farmer of the year in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Frances Osment Layman, of Athens; and one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Brett Ellison of Knoxville; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Richard and Sandy Layman of Niota, Charles and Leona Layman of Athens, and Dr. Thomas and Mary Ann Layman of Athens; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edith L. Hutsell of Athens, Hazel L. Dake of Athens, and Virginia Baker of Blacksburg, VA. A funeral service will be conducted, 8:00 P.M., Sunday, June 13, 2010 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Thomas and Rev. Bruce Vincent officiating. Interment will be 2:00 P.M., Monday in Union Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 5:00 - 7:30 P.M. prior to the service. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
