BATES, LEONARD EARL - age 71, of Strawberry Plains, passed away on Saturday October 25th, 2008 at St Mary's Hospital. He was an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman, and coached baseball for many years for Carter. He was preceded in death by: daughter Kimberly Suzanne Bates; and brothers Glen Bates and Jerry Bates. Survivors include: wife Wanda Bates; children Mike (Sheila) Bates and Vickie Ford; grandchildren Candace Kitts and Misty Ford; great-grandchildren: Dylan Kitts and Eyan Kitts; sister Joyce Cameron; brother Kenneth Bates; nephew Tim Bates; special brother-in-law Linden Cameron; and special hunting, fishing and golfing friends: Jim Nixon, Jimmy Burroughs, Lowell Hodge, Stanley Moore, Curtis French, Gary Dunlap, Dale Payne, Samuel Bates, Keith Ford, Tommy Spangler, and J.J. Jones. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday October 29th at 2:00 PM at Paw-Paw Hollow Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie White officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8 PM at McCarty-Evergreen Funeral Home.
