Delmar Dwight Montgomery, 93, of Oak Ridge, completed his journey in this world on Tuesday, February 24, 2015.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth D. Tarwater Montgomery, to whom he was married for 64 years, until her death in 2010, and his son, Ronald D. Montgomery. He is survived by son, John and daughter-in-law, Susan Fuhr; brother, Howard; brother-in-law, Jack C. Tarwater, and his nieces and nephews.
Delmar was a faithful member of Robertsville Baptist Church in Oak Ridge for many years, where he was a Sunday School teacher and deacon in years past. He served in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific. His ship, LST 844, was anchored off the beach during the Battle of Okinawa, and he was among the first American servicemen to enter Tokyo at the end of the war.
Discharged from the Navy in 1946, he lived and worked in Sevier County before moving to Oak Ridge where he was employed at ORNL for over 33 years. Delmar enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and later in life, golf.
First and foremost, Delmar was a Christian and a family man. He was loved and respected by his friends and family during his life-time, and he will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 27, 2015 from 5 – 7pm at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will follow at 7pm with Rev. Brian Scott officiating. Family and friends will gather on Saturday at 1pm for a graveside service at Shiloh Memorial Cemetery in Pigeon Forge.
The family asks that any memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
