During the Civil War Christopher C. Mateer served as a sergeant in Co. C 40th
Reg't Iowa Volunteer Infantry from 22 Aug. 1862 until 2 Aug. 1865, when he was
discharged at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory. On 2 Aug. 1890, he described
himself as aged 50 years, 5 feet 8 inches in height, with a florid complexion,
sandy hair and blue eys; he was then liveing in Rose Hill, Mahaska Co., Iowa.
