Mary Eleanor (Cox) Penny of Cosby, Cocke County, Tennessee, passed this life on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, while residing in Newport Health and Rehabilitation Center, at the age of 96.
Mrs. Penny was born on May 31, 1917 at Marion, North Carolina, in McDowell County, to Thomas A. Cox and Mabel Gertrude Smith Cox.
She married Hubert Ransom Penny, a U.S. Army Captain, who later became a ranger with the National Park Service. They adopted 2 sons, Garland Penny, who is deceased and Allen Penny who survives. Hubert Penny preceded Mrs. Penny in death in 1995. Mrs. Penny also had 2 sisters, Virginia C. Adams and Dorothy C. Smith, who preceded her in death. Her brother, Thomas A. Cox, III, of Morristown, also preceded her in death. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was the last surviving charter member of the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation.
Mrs. Penny was a longtime teacher in the Cocke County School system and helped mold the lives of her students. She was the class sponsor of several graduating classes at Cosby High School and contributed greatly to the lives of those around her. Mrs. Penny also worked as a librarian in Sevierville an at one time owned a craft shop in Townsend. She valued education and continued learning throughout her life. Mrs. Penny enjoyed her mountain home retreat in Cosby, and treasured those who visited and cared for her.
Funeral service will be held 11 am Monday Oct. 7, 2013 at the Episcopal Church in Newport, with Father David Garret presiding. Visitation will be from 10-11 am Monday prior to the service. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm, Monday, October 7, 2013 in Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville. There will not be a funeral procession.
In lieu of flowers, it is asked that contributions be made in her memory, to The University of the South (Sewanee), Director of Gift Planning, 735 University Avenue, Sewanee, TN 37383.
