'Burg businesswoman killed in house fire

GATLINBURG - A Gatlinburg businesswoman died early Tuesday morning after an apparently accidental fire burned part of the home where she was sleeping, according to officials and family members.
Firefighters found Nancy Ellen Carr, 62, owner and operator of Carr's Northside Cottages, in a second-floor bedroom of the home. Fire had destroyed the kitchen, dining room and living room, according to Gatlinburg Fire Chief Greg Patterson.
Patterson said firefighters received a call at 2:17 a.m. about the blaze at 216 Poplar Lane. The structure had a lower level where there were two rental rooms, he said.
Six people were staying there but were evacuated unharmed, he said.
Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found the structure was 30 percent involved with flames, according to Patterson. Firefighters were told that Carr was inside and focused their efforts on rescuing her, he said.
"I'm so proud of my guys," Patterson said. "They did a fantastic job of search and rescue."
Carr was transported to Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center, Patterson said. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, officials there said.
The fire was still under investigation Tuesday afternoon, but Patterson confirmed that it appeared to be accidental.
"We do know that it started somewhere in the kitchen," he said.
Patterson said he was saddened by the outcome of the incident, but praised Gatlinburg firefighters and paramedics for their work. He also thanked Pigeon Forge and Pittman Center fire departments and the Sevier County Ambulance Service for their assistance.
Carr's daughter, Mary Ellen Rader, said her mother was known as a kind and sweet person.
"She was well known in the community and had a good reputation," Rader said. "She always kept us grounded. ... She always tried to instill in us the simple things in life."
Rader said her grandparents started Carr's Northside Cottages in Gatlinburg in 1945 and that her mother had worked with the business all her life.
Carr is survived by two daughters, two sons and seven grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Burcham officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville.

Nancy Ellen Carr, age 62 of Gatlinburg passed away Tuesday March 28, 2006. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Gatlinburg and was owner and operator of Carr’s Northside Cottages in Gatlinburg. She was preceded in death by her parents Leamer and Lucille Carr, brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Shirley Carr, and best friend Shirley McKay.
