VEDA PEARL ANDERSON SMITH, of Dandridge, TN,-a poet, musician, and teacher – passed away March 21, 2006 at the age of 97. Born September 24, 1908 in Knoxville, TN, she was the daughter of James E. “Straighty” Anderson and Pearl King Anderson, both of whom served terms as Knoxville Circuit Court Clerk. She was a graduate of Young High School and Draughan’s Business College, and was formerly employed by the Daniel Briscoe Co. in Knoxville. She was a faithful member of French Broad Baptist Church for more than 45 years, where she served alternately as church pianist and organist. She had an inspiring passion for music, and especially enjoyed Old Harp singing. She taught music in Kodak and Dandridge Elementary schools, and gave private piano lessons in her home. In later years, she was a devoted member of the Dandridge Senior Citizen’s Center Rhythm Band. She is survived by three children and their spouses, Nancy and Edward J. Lawson of Catonsville, MD, Charles and Ersa Rhea Smith of Kodak, TN, and E. A. “Tony” and Connie Smith of Tucker, GA; sister-in-law, Lois Smith of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren and spouses, John and Marie Lawson, Kenneth and Linda Lawson, Cathy and Hayes Middelton, Robin and Darlene Smith, Chris and Cara Smith, Monya and James Roberts, and Chad and Julia Smith; great-grandchildren, Sarah Middleton, Jennifer, Colleen, John Mark, Shannon and Stephen Lawson, Tiffany, Jason, Trevor, Cody and Sean Smith, Jordan and Jaimie Roberts; and Teddy and Ryan Jones; and by dear friends, Edith Drinnen, Perna Noland, and Barbara Parker, to name a few. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest A. Smith, and an infant son; by brothers, John, Fred, and Ulysses Anderson; and sisters, Dorothy A. Sparks, and infant, Mary Lou Anderson. The family expreses its appreciation for the quality of care provided by the Jefferson County Nursing Home during Miss Veda’s stay. Friends will be received at French Broad Baptist Church in Dandridge, TN on Thursday, March 23, 2006 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the church on Friday, March 24, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. William W. Cope, Reverend Don Mitchell, and Reverend James Kinser officiating. The graveside service and interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Lawson, Robin Smith, Chris Smith, Chad Smith, Jack Payne, Wayne Griffin. Honorary pallbearers will be Edward Lawson, R. Craig Noland, James K. Roberts, Sam Garrison, Sam Hinchy, Dale Masoner and Woody Romines.
