Harold Atchley, age 85 of Sevierville, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2008 at Sevier County Health Care Center. A second generation funeral director at Atchley Funeral Home, Harold held the hands of many Sevier County families during their times of grief and, through helping them, taught his children the importance of serving others. In the days when Atchley Funeral Home provided ambulance service to Sevier County, Harold took great pride in getting people safely – but quickly – to medical care.
Mr. Atchley helped shape Sevier County through his many years of community service as Judge Pro-Tem and later as Judge of the Sevier County Court. During his tenure on the County Court he was instrumental in establishing the Sevier County Hospital, the Sevier County Industrial Park, and the remodeling of the Sevier County Court House. He also served as chairman of the finance committee of the County Court. He further contributed to his community as a founding board member of both First Federal Savings & Loan and Sevier County Health Care Center and served as chairman of both boards. He also was chairman of the board of Sevier County Utility District. Respected within his profession, Harold was past president of Tennessee Funeral Directors Association.
He served his community as a volunteer fireman with the Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department and was a longtime active member of the Sevierville Lions Club. A World War II veteran, he was in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a member of the American Legion Post #104. Harold was a member of First Baptist Church, Sevierville.
