Ridge policeman hit by 2 cars; one runs away
A Chicago Ridge auxiliary policeman was struck by two autos and gravely injured Nov. 4 while directing traffic near the scene of a fire.
Auxiliary policeman John Oudsteyn. 22, responded to a fire call reported at 2:31 a.m. at the North American Car
Corp., 103rd and Southwest hwy. He was posted at that intersection to help clear the way for Fire department vehicles when, police said, a southwest-bound car driven by Richard Norris, 29, 5239 Honore St., Chicago, hit him
and hurled him into the path of a northeast-bound car.
Norris received a ticket on a charge of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He is scheduled to appear in
Chicago Ridge court Dec. 1.
The accident was witnessed by Chicago Ridge Fireman Charles Maurer, who reported that the second car did not stop.
Maurer radioed for an ambulance from the injured officer's squad car. Oudsteyn was transported to Christ Community hospital. Oak Lawn, where he remains in intensive care.
According to police, blue paint chips and parts of the hit and run vehicle were left at the scene. The Chicago
Ridge Investigative division is continuing an extensive investigation of body shops in lite area and is being assisted by the Chicago Crime lab.
John Oudsteyn Senior, assistant fire chief and father of the stricken policeman, has offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the hit-and-run driver.
The injured policeman is the father of a baby boy who celebrated his first birthday Tuesday.
