David Chapman Oakley, age 84 of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, died Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. David was a member of the American Legion and retired from Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort. He served in the Pacific with the United States Navy during World War II. David was born, March 17, 1926 to the late Wiley Mason, a well known legendary Smoky Mountains’ guide, and Rebecca Ann Ogle Oakley. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Christy Oakley; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Brad Gianulis; daughter and fianceé Diahn Oakley and Paul Scoonover; grandchildren, Dominique, Jonathan, Joanna, Ben, Austin and Jessica; great-grandchildren, Nathan and Micah; brother, Wiley Casey Oakley; sister, Martha Rawlings and very special sister-in-law, Melba Oakley.
Family and friends will meet by 9:15 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2010 at Tennessee State Veterans’ Cemetery for a 9:30 a.m. graveside service with full military honors presented by the Volunteer State Veterans’ Honor Guard.
