Marjorie Elizabeth Phelps - age 91 of River Oaks Place, Loudon, left this life for the next Wednesday, September 11, 2013 in the full serenity of her faith. Marjorie was born April 7, 1922, the fifth child of Ira and Earnest and Myrtle Allen Phelps of Lenoir City, TN. Marjorie graduated from Lenoir City High School in 1940, and retired from South Central Bell Telephone after forty years employment throughout East Tennessee.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lenoir City and remained active in church life wherever she lived. Marjorie loved to travel, visited more than 27 countries, and made a month-long around-the-world trip. After her retirement, Marjorie twice went to Zimbabwe, Africa as a volunteer at Christian missions. Following her work in Africa, she served in Brazil until forced to return due to illness. Marjorie later lived in Indiana, where she continued performing church-related work.
Marjorie spent many years as a Sunday School teacher. In 1970, Marjorie became a member of the Women's Missionary Union of First Baptist Church and served as President from 1980 though 1987. Marjorie was a talented artist and developed her skills in pencil drawings, water colors, and oil paintings, many that decorated her home and those of her family.
Preceding Marjorie in death are her parents, brothers, Kenneth and Wayne Phelps; sisters, Cereta F. Phelps, Mildred Grubb, and Louise McNabb Way; niece, Sarah Phelps Reynolds and brothers-in-law, J. T. Grubb, Carl Gamertsfelder, Glenn N. McNabb, and Glenn M. Way.
She is survived by her sister, Jean Gamertsfelder, of Knoxville, TN, cousins, nieces and nephews, including nephew, Tommy Grubb and wife, Ginger, to whom she entrusted her affairs more then a decade ago, plus great-nieces and nephews. The family extends their gratitude to the entire staff of River Oaks Place, Loudon, for the genuinely caring attention she received and to nurses of Amedysis for their gentle attention during her final days.
The family will receive friends at Click Funeral Home, Lenoir City, Saturday, September 14, 2013 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Dr. Dick DeMerchant officiating. Interment will be private with no graveside services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made in her name to the Special Needs Classes, First Baptist Church, 2085 Simpson Road East, Lenoir City, TN 37772. Click Funeral Home, Lenoir City is in charge of arrangements.
