Woodrow Wilson Oakley, age 95 of Redford, Michigan, passed away Sunday, October 5, 2008. Mr. Oakley attended Berea College, where he was a championship swimmer. In WWII he served in the Philippines in the United States Navy, Seabees Division and received the Bronze Star. He was the son of the late Wiley Oakley “Roamin' Man of the Mountains” and Rebecca Ogle Oakley, and he was also preceded in death by his wife Genevieve Oakley.
Survivors include:
Children: Linda Lou Denham and husband David of Peekskill, New York; Donald G. Oakley of Redford, Michigan; Woodie Jean Martin of Nampa, Idaho; Louis Earl Oakley of Lake Havasu, Arizona
Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren
Sister: Martha Rawlings
Brothers: Wiley “Casey” Oakley, David Oakley
Sister-in-law: Melba Oakley
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), c/o Commander Jerry Green, 120 Hillis Drive, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, 37863.
The family will receive friends 1-3 PM Sunday with funeral service to follow at 3 PM in Atchley’s Smoky Mountain Chapel, Pigeon Forge.
