Fred A. Whaley , 72, a resident of Leavenworth for the past 49 years, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 22, 1997, in the Cascade Medical Center in Leavenworth.
He was born on Aug. 24, 1924, to James Monroe and Elvira ( Whaley ) Whaley in Sevier County, Tenn., where he grew up and received his early education.
In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in the Pacific Theater, and following his honorable discharge in 1945 he returned to Tennessee.
On Oct. 7, 1945, he married Margie Rayfield at Dalton, Ga., and they made their first home in Sevier County, Tenn.
In 1948, they came to Leavenworth, where he was employed by Motteler's Feed Store. He later worked on the construction of Rocky Reach Dam, and in 1957 became employed by the Peshastin Lumber and Box Co., which later became Peshastin Forest Products, as a heavy equipment mechanic until his retirement in 1987. Following his retirement from the mill, he worked for Motteler Orchards during harvest for several years.
Mr. Whaley was a member of VFW, Norman Douglas Post No. 4296 in Leavenworth; Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union, Local No. 2841, of which he had served as president; former member of the Leavenworth City Council; and he was a member of the Mount Calvary Primitive Baptist Church in Dryden, where he served as the church clerk and treasurer for several years. Fred enjoyed the activities associated with the outdoors and was an avid gardener. He loved his family immensely and was very proud of the accomplishments of his son, daughter and grandchildren. He was a very enthusiastic supporter of all sports programs his family participated in.
He is survived by his wife, Margie, of the family home; son and daughter-in-law, Fred D. "Sonny" and Gail Whaley of Arlington; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Dennis McMahon of Leavenworth; four granddaughters, Heather and Christa Whaley , Amy Moss and Tyree McMahon; one grandson, Brock McMahon; four sisters, Eileen Saunders of Florida, Mae Rusell of Coalfield, Tenn., Mildred Wagner and Verl Gill, both of Orange, Calif.; four brothers, Eugene Whaley of Athens, Ill., Ambrose Whaley of Illinois, B.C. Whaley and J.M. Whaley , both in Tennessee. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one great-grandson.
Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
