CASHMERE _ O.H. "Buck" Rayfield , 86, of Cashmere, a 25-year resident of the Upper Wenatchee Valley, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1993, in the Cashmere Convalescent Center.
He was born April 12, 1907, to George Newton and Martha Ellen (Barnes) Rayfield at Greenbrier, Tenn. He grew up on Big Laurel Creek. The family moved to Morgan's Branch and later to the Cow Flats.
Mr. Rayfield began work at 14 in the logging camps of eastern Tennessee and North Carolina. He later worked for the Little River Logging Company near Gatlinburg, Tenn.
He married Lona Barnes on Sept. 5, 1929, at Price Hill, Tenn. They lived at Bird's Creek and later moved to Maple's Branch for two years. They then returned to Bird's Creek. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in Greenbrier in 1934. He later worked for Alcoa in Maryville, Tenn. His wife died in 1939, and Mr. Rayfield worked on the family farm and raised their children.
He married Cecil Clabo on Nov. 9, 1945, at Smokey, Tenn., and they lived at Bird's Creek.
He moved to Peshastin in 1948 and worked at Peshastin Lumber and Box as a timber faller. He moved his family to Leavenworth in 1951 and to Peshastin in 1952. He retired in 1968 and returned to Sevierville, Tenn. He moved in with his daughter, Marie Hurst, in 1983. He returned to the Wenatchee Valley in 1989 and lived with his daughters.
Mr. Rayfield was a former member of the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union. He was a member of the Big Greenbrier Primitive Baptist Church and was instrumental in its relocation. He served as church clerk for 30 years. He also helped establish and construct the Mount Calvary Primitive Baptist Church in Dryden where he served as church clerk and deacon for several years.
Survivors inlcude a son, John Rayfield of Wenatchee; five daughters, Marie Hurst of Sevierville, Avis Higginbotham of Peshastin, Lillie Mae Franklin of Cashmere, Wilda Ward of Leavenworth and Doris Nierman of Dryden; a brother, Floyd of Leavenworth; six sisters, Lora and Laurinda Ogle, both of Sevierville, Rosetta Dunn, Alice Watson and Margie Whaley, all of Leavenworth and Lillard Noland of Peshastin; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, a son, three brothers and a grandson.
Arrangements are by Ward's Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth.
