DEL RIO-Joe Frank Turner's honors on Father's Day are many. As the father of four and head of a family now stretching into five generations, the 91-year-old patriarch customarily receives numerous cards, phone calls, and special gifts each June.
However, this past Father's Day brought him a gift he never expected.
With the whole clan in on the secret, Turner was honored during a special Father's Day service at Sand Hill Church of God in Jesus Name in Del Rio's Old 15th community when Col. Eddie Young, USAF Retired, assisted by Turner's grandson Jordon Self, presented the World War II veteran with a shadowbox display filled with the medals and ribbons Turner earned during his service in the United States Army Air Corps.
The gift replaced Turner's original awards that were destroyed in a 1991 house fire.
To make sure their loved one attended the Sunday service, family members told him that he would be honored as a special father that morning, but did not tell him the complete reason for his attendance.
