MCHUGH FRIEDA (THOMAS) SPEER - often called "a lovely lady", passed away at Manor Care Health Services in Venice, FL on April 20, 2011. She was 81 years of age and had declined from Alzheimer's and heart problems in recent years. Preceded in death by parents, Haskell and Cloa Thomas; husbands, Aloysisus Phillip McHugh, (AF Ret, Bird Coronel) and William Herbert Speer (Navy vet); sister, Jewel Koneski; brothers, H.D. Thomas and Donald Thomas. She is survived by daughter, Kathleen Speer Roepke; sister, Carol Stephens; brothers, Larry Thomas and Johnny Thomas, 3 grandchildren, 16 nieces and nephews and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Born May 6, 1929 in Knoxville, TN After graduating from Knoxville High she began a career in retailing. She married Wm. H. Speer, who was stricken with Multiple Sclerosis and lived until 1987. Frieda was dedicated to her career, caring for her husband and raising their daughter. Her career extended more than 35 years working with Miller's Inc. and Proffitt's Inc/Saks Fifth Ave in Knoxville, TN. Frieda retired in 1990 and moved to Winter Springs, FL to live near (sister) Carol and, Kelly Stephens and their children: Duane, Mary and Holly. She visited and stayed in touch with additional family residing in Lakeland, FL. Frieda met and married A. Phillip McHugh and enjoyed extended family including the McHugh grandchildren. They loved to travel and did so extensively until his sudden death from heart problems in 1994. She remained very close to Kathleen and they enjoyed many family events and travel adventures. She continued friendships in Knoxville, those from Air Force contacts and had many others during retirement in Winter Springs, FL. Services are arranged with Baldwin-Fairchild, 7520 Aloma Ave, Winter Park, FL. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Aloma Goldenrod Chapel, Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 10 am. Graveside services will follow at All Faith's Memorial Park, Casselberry, FL. Frieda will rest beside her beloved husband, Phillip, as was her wishes.
