Patsy Temple Waters, age 76, of Sevierville, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, December 20, 2006. A Christian, wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Waters was a member of First Baptist Church, Sevierville for over sixty years. Patsy enjoyed her family, home, cooking, entertaining, and her Sevier County heritage. In her zenith, she was a voracious reader, eager traveler, family historian, and unequaled hostess. Patsy was an exceptional cook, serving meals over the years to visiting dignitaries as well as customers of the family business, Temple Milling Company in Sevierville. Her infectious warmth and zeal for life was felt by all who knew her. Patsy graduated from the University of Tennessee, magna cum laude, where she was president of Sigma Kappa Sorority and a member of the Mortar Board. She married John B. Waters, Jr., of Sevierville, on April 8, 1953. Their life together included service in the U.S Navy, contributions to the East Tennessee legal community and leadership of the Tennessee Valley Authority. When Mr. Waters was Chairman of the TVA Board, Patsy was known as the First Lady of TVA. She taught in the Sevier County School System and for many years was an active member in the GFWC Manthano Club and the Tuesday Evening Music Club. She served on the board of the Knoxville Museum of Art and held many other offices and positions with civic, church and charitable organizations.
Patsy was born October 28, 1930, in Oak City, Tennessee (Sevier County), and was preceded in death by parents John Ellis and Effie Benson Temple and sister, Frankie Temple Cutshaw.
She is survived by her husband, John B. Waters, Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, John B. Waters III and Beth Horn Waters of Knoxville; daughter, Cynthia Beth Waters of Sevierville; four grandchildren, Spencer Waters and Alexander Waters of Knoxville, Muteyi Waters and Judy Moseti-Waters of Sevierville; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmie and Marie Temple of Sevierville; sister, Mary Joyce Temple Hughes of Sevierville; sister-in-law and husband, Mary Louise Waters Hailey and Pete Hailey of Sevierville; nephews and nieces, Janelle Nevins, Kenneth Cutshaw, James A. Temple, Jr., Amy Huskins and Matt Hughes; and a host of extended family and friends.
Memorial donations may be made to The Orbit Village Project, 314 Cherry Street, Sevierville, TN 37862 or to the Sevier County Library, 321 Court Avenue, Sevierville, TN 37862.
Funeral service 2:30 PM Saturday at First Baptist Church, Sevierville with Dr. Randy Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Spencer Waters, Alexander Waters, Muteyi Waters, Matt Hughes, Kenneth Cutshaw, and James A. Temple, Jr. The family will receive friends 12-2 PM Saturday at First Baptist Church, 317 Parkway, Sevierville and friends may call at their convenience after 3 PM Friday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
