SEVIERVILLE - David Butler, who owned and operated Butler Radio & Electric Co. downtown for more than 50 years, died Sunday. He was 82.
"He was an ideal businessman. He treated his customers with respect," said John Waters Jr., who knew the family well. "He was a quiet, unassuming man and a good citizen."
His death comes two months after that of his wife of 58 years, Buna, who died March 28. The couple opened the Bruce Street store in November 1946.
He was born in Pigeon Forge but lived in Sevierville all his adult life. After attending Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Tennessee, majoring in electrical engineering, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
"I loved him. It took a little bit to get to know him. He'd help with whatever he could," said Annette Carpenter of Thoughts 'n' Things on Bruce Street. She worked with him in the Downtown Association over the years.
She said one woman's dishwasher broke when she was expecting company for the weekend. Butler could not get a replacement part in time, so he took the dishwasher out of his home and installed it in hers for the weekend.
"He was a very accommodating person, a wonderful man," she said.
Rudolph Douglas, who worked nearby at Cash Hardware, said Butler worked every day he could. "He was on the street Friday," he said.
"He certainly was a first-class Southern gentleman," with a firm and honest business reputation, said John Fox. His late wife, Ruby, was always pleased when Butler represented long-term business interests at the Downtown Association meetings, he said.
Susie Ferguson of 20/20 Optical, also on Bruce Street, knew Butler through the DTA and the Lions Club, of which she is president.
He joined the Lions Club in 1946 and had 52 years of consecutive years of perfect attendance. "David served in every capacity" over the years, Ferguson said. "He was a very quiet, dedicated person. He just led quietly. Everyone respected him tremendously."
Lions Club International presented him in 1996 with the Melvin Jones Fellowship for outstanding service to his fellow man.
Ferguson said his death is a tremendous loss to the club, to downtown and to the community at large. The couple's deaths so close together are "a double heartache," she said."We'll feel his influence for years to come."
He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sevierville, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Butler leaves a daughter, Mary Ann Newman; and son, Robert D. Butler, and three grandchildren.
Funeral is 3 p.m. Wednesday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. Military graveside service and interment will follow in Pigeon Forge Cemetery. The Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church of Sevierville or the charity of one's choice. Anna Garber may be reached at agarber@themountainpress.com.
