Sheriff's team loses 27-year veteran with death of Mike Fisher
By: JEFF FARRELL, Staff Writer
August 25, 2007
The Sevier County Sheriff's Office lost one of its longest-serving deputies Thursday to an apparent heart attack.
Sgt. Mike Fisher, a 27-year veteran of the department, died en route to The University of Tennessee Medical Center after calling the sheriff's department from his home. Deputies and emergency personnel responded, but he died while being airlifted to the hospital, Sheriff Ron Seals said.
It was the second loss this year for the department. Sheriff Bruce Montgomery died in February after a long battle with cancer. County Commission chose Seals to act as interim sheriff until the next county election in 2008.
"These are trying times," Seals said. "(Fisher had) been here 27 years. Me and him have been here longer than anybody."
Fisher was the morning shift supervisor for the department. He served as an investigator during the tenure of Sheriff Carmen Townsend before moving back on to the road.
"He was an individual that was very, very organized," Seals recalled. "Everything had a place and it had to be there.
"He had a real good sense of humor. All these years we worked together ... We'd sit around and reminisce about things we'd done over the years."
Atchley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
