OTTO , LUCY "JOHNNIE" COLE - from the Sugarlands near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, passed away on May 22, 2000 at the Arlington County Hospital, Arlington, Virginia. Johnnie was noted for her beautiful smile and her love of children. The youngest daughter of Alexander Cole, she was born and raised in a log cabin in the Sugarlands, now part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She graduated from the Pi Beta Phi School. While living in Gatlinburg, she sang in the choir of the First Baptist Church and worked at the Greystone Hotel where she met her future husband. She married Francis Otto of Chicago, Illinois and moved to Arlington, Virginia where she raised her family. She was always ready with a smile, a warm laugh, and a helping hand. Johnnie enjoyed entertaining her frequent visitors with stories of life in the Smokies, and was famous for her prize winning biscuits, fried chicken, pies, pickles, and crafts. Johnnie is survived by her husband; her sister, Martha Cole Whaley of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; daughters, Johnnie Jo Lindahl of Arlington, Va., and Martha J. Otto of Fairfax County, Va.; son, R. Thomas Otto of Arlington, Va.; and grandchildren, Maya, Zoe, Hazel, Jo, and Hank. In addition to her own grandchildren, she was "Grannie" to many other children who loved her dearly. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the First Baptist Church, Gatlinburg, Tenn. 37738.
