HARRIS, MARIE WHALEY - 92, died Saturday (September 30, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. She was a resident of Asbury Center Health Care Center. She was born Friday, August 13, 1914, in the Sugarlands portion of Sevier County, now a part of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. She lived her early life in Sevierville. She met Harold Harris, a student at Drew Seminary, when they were asked to sing together in a community musical celebration. Harold and Marie were married June 10, 1937. Marie was the very first "Miss Sevier County". Marie loved music, cooking, and flower gardening and arranging. She was in several garden clubs in these communities and was a great hostess. In her later years, she enjoyed playing billiards. She sang in the choirs of all the churches her husband served in Holston United Methodist Conference. Together, Harold and Marie served churches in Kingsport, Telford, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Alcoa, Oak Ridge, Newport, Greeneville, and Maryville. Harold was District Superintendent in Kingsport from 1964-1970, as well as being a pastor for a total service of 42 years in Holston Conference. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Rev. Harold Craig Harris; parents, John and Charity Ogle Whaley; and three sisters, Bessie Townsend, Amaline Hodges, and Kate Marshall, all of Sevier County. Surviving are: her daughter, Anne Sorrell and husband, Lynn; grandchildren, Wesley Craig and Mary Rachel Sorrell; great-grandson, Quinton Shaw Buchanan, all of Kingsport; her son, Lynn Harris and wife, Rhonda; grandchildren, Lisa Anne and Melissa Lynn Harris, Cordova, TN; special grand-nephew, John Jerman and wife, Tamara, Atlanta, GA; and other special family members, Nancy and Jim Staub, Seymour, TN, Amy and David Morehous, Knoxville, TN, and Beth and Stewart McKeever, Charleston, SC. Services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Edwards and Rev. Jack Weikel officiating. The family will receive friends in the social hall of the church immediately following the service. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Cemetery in Pigeon Forge, TN, where she will be interred next to her husband. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be: Ministers of Holston United Methodist Conference. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Marie to: First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Organ Renovation Fund, P.O.
