Resided in Sevierville, TN
Janice Kay Hartsell Rhea, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013, peacefully surrounded by her family and friends. Born July 21, 1951 in Newport, TN, she was the youngest daughter of Ceborn and Frances Hartsell. Janice grew up in the Jones Cove community. All her life she was affectionately known as "baby sister" to her older sisters Maggie, Kate, Sue, and Rosie, and her brother, Lonnie. She graduated from Gatlinburg-Pittman High School in 1969. After a two year courtship that began as a double date, she married her one and only true love, Stanley Rhea, on July 16, 1969, at a small ceremony in the home of the late Rev. Andy Ball. After 44 years of marriage, only death would part them. On June 18, 1974, Janice and Stanley welcomed their first child, a daughter, they named Staci. Five years later on August 13, 1979, the family was complete with the birth of their son, Clinton. Their home was a popular gathering place for good food, much laughter, and lasting friendships. Of all the titles she held, "Mamaw" and "Nana" were the two she was most proud of. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Laci, Jason, Jaxon, Lauren, Dylan, Caitlin, Emma, and great-granddaughter, Peyton. Janice was always a devoted, loving and caring mother, wife, Mamaw, Nana, sister, and friend.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ceborn and Frances Rolen Hartsell; oldest sister, Mildred; infant brother, Franklin David; infant sister, Mary Lee; and sister, Bonnie Kate Helton Kelley. Janice and her siblings remained very close throughout her life. Much of their time spent together was centered around faith, family, favorite shared memories, contagious laughter at times, and a good meal. In later years, the bond with her sister, Kate, only deepened as Alzheimer's and dementia began to take its toll on her beloved sister. When able, Janice helped care for Kate, and spent as much time with her as possible, until her death on July 25, 2013. She was a member of Howard's View Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and janitor for many years. Janice loved to read and when she was in better health, enjoyed her flower garden and the birds that visited her feeders.
She leaves behind her loving husband of 44 years, Stanley; daughter and son-in-law, Staci and Justin Limestahl; son and daughter-in-law, Clinton and Amanda Rhea; beloved grandchildren: Lauren and Dylan Ayers; Caitlin and Emma Limestahl; Laci, Jason, and Jaxon Rhea; great-granddaughter, Peyton Olivia Ayers; sisters and brothers-in-law, Maggie and Larry Fox, Sue and Olen Williams, Rosie and Arven Hurst; brother and sister-in-law, Lonnie and Blanche Hartsell; and honorary sister, Doris Helton. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and extended family members and special friends. Janice will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Janice's memory be made to the charity or organization of your choice.
