Good Citizen Awards: DAR chapter honors area students
Mary Blount DAR Chapter
The Mary Blount Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented the 2007-08 Good Citizen Awards at the Awards Recognition Tea on Feb. 9. The honorees were Travis Cotten, Alcoa High School; Joshua Carico, Heritage High School; Rebekah Watson, Maryville Christian School; Kelli Raby, Maryville High School; and Grant Allard, William Blount High School.
Grant Allard won the Essay Contest and received a $100 prize. His essay has been sent to the Appalachian District for the state competition. The state winner will be announced at the state DAR convention in May. All five seniors received a Certificate of Merit, a recognition pin and a monetary award for their accomplishments.
Allard is a senior at William Blount High School. He is the son of Suzie Allard of Maryville. He is President of the International Club, Deputy Chief of Mission of Model United Nations and member of the National English Honor Society and the school newspaper staff. Grant was a member of the Youth Leadership Blount Class of 2006 and was the program producer and director of the WBHS Veterans Day Salute this year. He is the WBHS student representative on the Blount County School Board. He has played on soccer teams and served as a referee for community and regional soccer championships. Grant was honored as the Young Male Referee of the Year in Tennessee and Region III in 2007. After graduation, he will attend Furman University and study political science and economics focusing on international studies.
Carico is a senior at Heritage High School. He is the son of Joy Braden of Maryville. Joshua has been on the honor roll for four years. He has served on the Student Council, participated in FCA, and played on the varsity baseball team. He has worked with the Smoky Mountain Heritage Center, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Angel Tree in the community. Joshua plans to study Pre-Med in college.
Cotten is a senior at Alcoa High School. He is the son of Kim and Andy Cotten of Alcoa. He has been in the Technology Student Association for 3 years and played on the football team for 4 years. Travis has been a Student Office Worker this year and served on the Student Council. He is active in the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Group and has been on the Youth Missions Trips. He plans to study Computer Assisted Drafting at ITT.
Raby is a senior at Maryville High School. She is the daughter of Jack and Sharon Raby of Maryville. She has participated in drama productions and served as an athletic trainer for MHS and a member of Youth Leadership Blount. She has been on nine mission trips with Monte Vista Baptist Church traveling throughout the south. Kelli has served her community by being a Maryville High School Deb member working with Second Harvest Food Drive and other charities. She plans to attend college to study biology and prepare to be a high school teacher.
Watson is a senior at Maryville Christian School. She is the daughter of Donna and Tim Watson of Maryville. She earned the Distinguished Christian High School Student Award, USAA National Math Award, and William Blount Leaders and Achievers Award. She is a member of the Beta Club, Yearbook Staff, and has been active in school dramas and worked as a stage manager. Rebekah has served as an intern at Blount County Children's Advocacy Center and attended the Blount County Citizen Police Academy. She plans to attend the University of Tennessee next fall.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children. DAR members have traced their lineage back to soldiers of the American Revolution.
Mary Blount Chapter of the DAR has presented a Good Citizen Award to a senior from each of the area high schools since the 1940s. The award winners are selected based on academic achievement, leadership and service to their school and community.
