Resided in Sevierville, TN
David Elder Huskey, age 88 of Pigeon Forge, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013. He was of the Baptist faith. David was proud to have worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) before entering the U.S. Navy. He retired from Cherokee Textile Mills after working there for more than thirty years. After his retirement, David spent many years at the family cabin on Douglas Lake. He also spent many years as a member of the Gatlinburg Elks Club.
David was a Navy veteran serving on the battleship USS Mississippi during World War II. He took part in twelve major battles including Shuri Castle, the Philippines, the China Sea, and Leyte Gulf (considered the greatest naval battle ever fought). He earned the nickname "Radar Eyes" because he could see so well at night – something he learned from hunting possums in his youth.
David was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Betty R. Watson Huskey; parents, Pink and Polly Bradley Huskey; sister, Inez Cogdill; and brothers Parlon, Burl, Paulas, Billy, and Hoover Huskey. He is survived by son Doran and wife Mary; daughter Sharon and Joe Ailey; grandson Doran and wife Lydia; grandson Matt and wife Heather; great-granddaughters Linley and Quinn; and a host of family and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the East Tennessee Children's Hospital, Development Dept., P.O. Box 15010, Knoxville, TN 37901.
Special thanks go to Dr. Curtis Burke and staff, Girling Health Care, and the staff at Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Graveside service and interment 10 AM Saturday in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens with Rev. Gary Huskey and Rev. Bobby Owens officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #104. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Friday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
