Family celebrates 45 years of business in county
Members of the Collier family - Steve Collier (left), Kay Collier-Pittman, Irene Collier, Don Collier and Brent Collier - are celebrating 45 years in business in Sevier County.
SEVIERVILLE — As of July, Steve, Don, Brent and Kay Collier are celebrating 45 years of business in the Sevier County area.
The Collier family is involved in hotels, restaurants, cabins, campgrounds, wineries and rental management.
The family business started as a much smaller idea when their parents, Mindle and Irene Collier, purchased land at the current location of Rodeway Inn on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge.
When the Colliers purchased that piece of property in 1962, they had in mind a small motel on the Parkway to give visitors to the area a convenient place to stay while vacationing in the Smokies. Six years later in July 1968, they and their children opened the first 22 rooms at the location under the name Mountain Skys Motel.
Since that start, those 22 rooms in one hotel have grown to more then 1,000 rooms as well as restaurants, cabins, wineries, and campgrounds across the county.
Family was always an integral part of their business; their children were around all the time when they first opened Mountain Skys. Steve, Don, Brent and Kay are all still around the business. Under their leadership, Collier Development has been named a “First & Future Corporation” for the Knoxville Metropolitan Area five times, distinguishing it as one of the largest and fastest growing companies in our region. They are also involved in the local community as well as other business associations throughout the state.
They are all graduates of Leadership Sevier and have previously been designated as Tourism Leaders of the Year. They have served on various boards as well as professional boards for their franchises. The family’s philanthropic interest can be seen through their service to the Boys & Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains, Sevierville Chamber of Commerce, Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministries, Leadership Sevier, Friends of the Smokies, American Eagle Foundation, Relay for Life and Keep Sevier Beautiful.
Several of their buildings have received awards for design/construction. Collier Drive, constructed during the building of Governor’s Crossing, is one of the most used connector roads between the Parkway and Veterans Boulevard.

Irene Rebecca Collier, age 82 of Pigeon Forge passed away Friday March 23, 2012.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Pigeon Forge, the Pigeon Forge Community Center water aerobics and was an avid Lady Vol fan.

Funeral service 10AM Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Pigeon Forge with Rev. Dale Ellenburg, Rev. Wayne Cook and Rev. W.W. Cope officiating. Interment will follow in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens.
