Members of Class of '52 reflect during reunion

GATLINBURG - The times they keep changing. The ladies and gentlemen of the Pi Beta Phi Class of 1952 can tell you just how much.
About 30 people, both graduates and their family members, attended a class reunion, marking 54 years, at Holt Park on Saturday.
"It has been a few years," Freda Watson of Gatlinburg said.
In 1952, Elizabeth II became queen of Great Britain and U.S. President Harry S. Truman was succeeded by Dwight Eisenhower. Life in Gatlinburg was enjoyable during the 1950s, Watson said.
"It was great," she said. "It was a big town to us then. It has changed a lot. We don't know everybody now."
June McCarter Ogden is another '52 graduate who still lives locally.
"It was a very exciting time (in the '50s), but we didn't realize it," she said. "We grew up in a resort town and didn't know any different. It really was a unique experience."
Betty Reagan Romero took the opportunity to show some mock indignation about the transportation policies of a half-century ago.
"We lived too close to the school and we had to walk," she said. "I never got to ride the school bus."
Romero still stuck to the rules, though.
"The school bus stopped us one day because it was raining, and we told them we wouldn't ride because we weren't supposed to," she said.
