U.S. Veteran Velma Sloan Roberts, age 98, of Rockford, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of Clifford and Betty Sloan and was the youngest of 19 children. She is survived by her daughter and loving caregiver, Willaine Kirby; sons, Wendell Roberts of Largo Florida, and Darrell and wife, Phyllis Roberts of Coffeyville, Kansas. Velma was blessed with 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 7 great great grandchildren. She was known as the doll lady for her beautiful Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that she stitched for family and special people she met along the way. She was inducted into the daughters of the Union in December as a true daughter of a Civil War Veteran. She will be missed by all. The family would like to send a special thank you to Blount Memorial Hospice and to Dr. John Cowan MD. Family and friends will meet at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009 at Peck’s Memorial Methodist Cemetery for the Graveside service and interment, Rev. Greg Long and Chaplain Willa Estell officiating.
