Olive Lura Ghormley was born the last of three siblings on July 1, 1916 to Elijah Frank Ogle and Nora Ogle. Her birthplace was the farm recently owned by her late sister, Marjorie Tower and husband Harold Tower, 9 miles southwest of Anthony between what used to be called Spring and Ferguson. She attended a one-room elementary school a mile from her home. During inclement weather, father Frank would hitch up a horse to the family wagon and drive her and sister Marjorie and brother Hal to school. Later, her mother moved to Anthony so Olive and Marjorie could attend high school while Frank tended the farm. After attending business school in Hutchinson, she worked for the Hutchinson (Kansas) Vinegar Works where she met co-worker and future husband Robert Clyde Ghormley.
In 1940, Robert joined the U. S. Navy for a six-year commitment. Olive followed Robert to San Diego where they were married in 1943. Their first son R. C. was born the following year as Robert’s ship participated in the retaking of Guam during WWII. After the war, Robert worked in Hutchinson, and the family grew to include Mike in 1947. Three years later, Olive and Robert moved their family to Anthony, having bought from Frank a farm located a mile east of Anthony. In 1954, Curtis was the final addition to their family. Olive and Robert remained at the farm until after Robert’s passing in 1986. Olive then moved into Anthony to a new home just west of the courthouse, where she lived until 1997. Her move to Andover, KS, put her closer to son Curtis and gave her the level of care she needed, where she resided until her death on June 11, 2010.
A family saying that Olive would thrust upon the children whenever they suggested buying something new, was “use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without,” typifying the values she instilled in her sons. Upon being asked by her grandson Doug for the most important advice she could pass along, she gave him two thoughts: attend to your faith in God; and save your money. Olive probably never realized the formative influence she had on others in the areas of thrift, family values, dedication to the community, sustained hard work, and faith.
