Dorothy Roots Johnson , 97, of Texhoma died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, in Spearman, Texas.
Celebration of life services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of Texhoma with the Rev. Tommy Hull, pastor, and David Moore, youth pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Texhoma Cemetery. Arrangements are by Henson-Novak Funeral Home of Guymon.
Dorothy Laureta Roots was born Jan. 21, 1915, in Tyrone to James Gibson "J.G." and Sara May "Ogle" Roots . The family moved to Texhoma in 1922, where she graduated from high school in 1933. She attended PAMC in Goodwell while working for Dr. Jack, the dentist in Texhoma . Dorothy married Lowell "Squidge" Johnson in his parents' home on Christmas morning 1936. After marrying, Dorothy became a full-time wife and mother to their three children, Georgia, Patricia and Robert. Her home was the gathering place for many happy family occasions and where the grandchildren and neighborhood kids were always welcome.
Dorothy gave her life to the Lord Jesus Christ on her 34th birthday, having worked faithfully in the church for several years before giving Jesus her heart. She continued her service to First Baptist Church of Texhoma in various ministries — Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years, VBS worker, "bus driver" for children to have a way to church. However, her heart was most fulfilled through her efforts in the Women's Missionary Union. She was honored with a banquet for having served in WMU for 40 years; she served as associational WMU treasurer for several years and as associational WMU president as well as having served as president of the local WMU at First Baptist. Lifelong friendships developed with women across the area and the state due to their shared interest in reaching others for Christ through missions.
Dorothy was a loving mother and grandmother. She and Lowell were avid fans through the years of Texhoma Red Devils, Gruver Lady Greyhounds, Goodwell Eagles and Lady Eagles, Liberal Redskins and summer softball depending on which child, grandchild or great-grandchild was on the field, on the court, on the mound or on the track. Her four older great-grandchildren counted it a blessing to have photo memories of five generations once their children were born.
In 2006, after breaking her leg, Dorothy moved into Dunaway Manor in Guymon, where she resided until a recent illness. Her family wishes to express their appreciation and deep gratitude to the administration and staff of Dunaway Manor/Heritage Community. Also, words cannot express how thankful the family is for the care Dorothy received in the BSA Critical Care Unit, Odyssey Hospice and Hansford Manor.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; her parents; her husband; two sisters, Madeline Sellers and Vera Bentley; her brother, James Roots ; and her son-in-law, Fred Davidson.
Survivors include a daughter, Georgia Davidson of Gruver, Texas; a son, Robert Johnson and wife Rena of Dacula, Ga.; three granddaughters, Misha Moore and husband Gordon of Goodwell, Melinda Cline and husband Mike of Liberal, Kan., and Tammy Hursey and husband John of Lawrenceville, Ga. She was "Dot Mama" to her great-grandchildren, Adam and Jamie Cline of Wellington, Texas, David and Danae Moore of Goodwell, Courtney and Clayton Jackson of Wichita Falls, Texas, Caleb and Mariah Cline of Liberal and Zachary, Austin, Joseph and Nathan Hursey of Lawrenceville. Her great-great-grandchildren are Savannah and Madison Cline, Trighton Moore, Peyton Cline, Colby Jackson and soon-to-arrive baby girl Moore. She also is survived by a brother-in-law, Buss Johnson of Texhoma ; a sister-in-law, Millie Humphrey of Reseda, Calif.; a special great-niece and family, Jolene and Junior Ortega and Aleksa Solis of Amarillo; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive guests for viewing and visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church of
Texhoma .
The family suggests memorials be to Texhoma First Baptist Church, Box 526, Texhoma , OK 73949, or in care of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, P.O. Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942.
