Atchley family mourns losses
SEVIERVILLE - A family lost two brothers and Sevier County lost two pillars of the community this week when Harold and Bill Atchley died within a few days of each other.
Bill Atchley died Monday at the age of 88. He was director of missions for the Sevier County Baptist Association from 1955 until 1987. He also served as a state representative in two separate terms from 1978 until 1980 and from 1982 until 1984. He was the county's first Veteran's Officer, serving first in a part-time capacity and later in a full-time capacity until 1978. He helped found Camp Smoky. His son, Bryan, is mayor of Sevierville.
His brother, Harold, died Thursday at the age of 85. Harold Atchley was the longtime director of Atchley Funeral Home, one of the county's oldest businesses. He started working as director at a time when the funeral home still provided ambulance service for the area. Harold was judge of the Sevier County Court and served in county government; he also helped start the Sevier County Hospital and Sevier County Industrial Park.
Both men were veterans of World War II and served as volunteer firefighters in Sevierville.
"The entire family has contributed to the quality of life of this community for all their days," said R.B. Summitt II, president of Sevier County Bank. "Bill and Harold will certainly be missed."
Summitt said he grew up with the men's sons; Harold's house, he said, was the place where everyone would congregate when they were younger.
"I think for most of us that grew up here from the 50s to the 90s, the Atchleys were like part of the family," he said.
They were involved in so many of the community's activities, he said, that it was hard to sum up all their accomplishments.
"It's such a diversity of interests and contributions, it's hard to put into a few sentences."
Local attorney John Waters, himself a fixture in local politics, said the same.
"They've been such a prominent family and had a lot of influence," he said. "They've been involved in so many, many things...
"It's just sad to lose two brothers like that."
Both men were longtime members of First Baptist Church of Sevierville.
Alderman Claude Ownby said he remembered meeting them soon after he started attending the church.
"They have always been friends to everybody," he said. "I don't know of anybody that had anything bad to say about Harold and Bill Atchley...
"They are special people to me. You just couldn't ask for better people."
