Mary Emily Trotter, 76, of Sevierville passed away Monday, July 14, 2003 in the Hospice Service of Fort Sanders Sevier County Nursing Home.
Emily was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church in Sevierville. She was a graduate of Sevier County High School, the University of Tennessee School of Nursing in Memphis and the Teachers College (Nursing) of Columbia University, New York, New York. Emily was a member of the U.S. Air Force Cadet Nursing Corps and served one year of active duty and twenty years in the reserves of the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of Major. She was an active member of the American Legion Post 104 in Sevierville. Emily devoted her life to the profession of nursing as well as caring for others in her community. During her fifty-year career as a professional nurse, she served as the Director of Nursing at Middlesboro Hospital in Kentucky, Bristol Memorial Hospital in the Tri Cities as well as the East Tennessee Regional Director of Public Health Nursing, the position from which she retired. Emily had been the recipient of numerous awards including the Broady Humanitarian Award, the Outstanding Alumni of the University of Tennessee College of Nursing, and the Alma E. Gault Leadership Award from the Tennessee Nurses Association of which she was an active member.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emert Arthur and Ollie Tinsley Trotter; brothers, John Robert, Mell Emert, H.D. and James Tinsley Trotter; sisters, Sadie Ruth Trotter, Virginia Trotter Stafford, and Dorothy Trotter McMahan.
Her sister, Betty Jane Trotter; niece, Virginia Trotter Betts; nephews, Jim and Bob Trotter and Miles McMahan III; 4 great nieces, 2 great nephews, 2 great great nieces and first cousin and lifelong friend Pat R. Davenport survive Emily.
A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003 at Shiloh Cemetery with Rev. H.B. "Bud" Hauk, Jr. officiating. The family and friends wishing to go in procession to the cemetery will meet at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 17 at Rawlings Funeral Home. Interment will follow the military rites, which will be performed by the American Legion Post #104. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 16 at Rawlings Funeral Home.
Members of her Sunday school class at the First United Methodist Church of Sevierville are honored to serve as pallbearers for Emily.
Her family wishes to express their appreciation to Drs. Panella, Emmett, Baird, Chao, and Cross and the nursing staff at UT Medical Center and Fort Sanders Sevier County Nursing Home.
In lieu of flowers, Emily and the family has requested that donations be made to the Tennessee Nurses Foundation, 545 Mainstream Drive, Suite 405, Nashville, TN, 37228.
