"She was nice lady and a good mother," said brother-in-law Leonard Parton. Leonard Parton is a brother to the late Robert Lee Parton, Avie Lee's husband. Parton, 80, had 12 children, including country music star Dolly Parton. She was born on Oct. 5, 1923 in South Carolina and died Friday evening. Like her children, she was also known to sing and play guitar and released two albums of her own in 1990 called "Smoky Mountain Mama,". Her heritage was also musical. Her father, the Rev. Jake Owens, a fiddler, wrote "Singing His Praise," recorded by Kitty Wells. It was her brother, Bill, who gave Dolly an acoustic guitar when she was 7 and got her on a radio show on WIVK in Knoxville. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m. this evening at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville. Interment will be at Caton's Chapel Cemetery.
