Barbara Jean Duncan was born May 5, 1935 in Newport, Tennessee, the daughter of Martha (Mattie) and Hillery Duncan. Barbara received her Registered Nurse (RN) degree from Fort Sanders School of Nursing in Knoxville, TN and had a long career in nursing, retiring from The University of Tennessee Hospital. After retiring, she returned to Newport and built a home next to her sister, Brenda Griffin, and helped care for their mother. Barbara was a member of the First Families of Tennessee, tracing her heritage to Cocke County before Tennessee became a state. She was also a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, having traced her heritage back to a soldier who fought in the American Revolutionary War. An avid reader, she supported and loved the Stokely Memorial Library.
