KEY WEST, Iowa - Carl Heitz , 78, of Key West, died at 9:48 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West, with the Rev. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a scripture wake service at 2:45 p.m. Members of the Key West Fire Dept. and the Dubuque County Firefighters Association will assemble at 7 p.m.
He was born on July 9, 1932, in Dubuque, son of Loras and Blanche (Nagel) Heitz . He married Joan Loes on Oct. 12, 1957, at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West.
Carl served in the Army during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Dubuque American Legion Post 6.
He owned Heitz Barber Shop for 51 years. He thoroughly enjoyed going to work to visit with his customers and friends.
Carl served 45 years with the Key West Fire Department, the last 35 years as a director. He also enjoyed playing baseball and played for years with the Key West and Cascade teams. He was inducted into the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993. He also was a member of Saint Joseph's Holy Name Society and the Elk's Lodge 297.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Joan; five children, Cynthia (Lynn B.) Fuller, of Dubuque, Mark (Julie) Heitz , of St. Donatus, Lanny (Tanie) Heitz , of Laramie, Wyo., Dale (Marilyn) Heitz , of Sherrill, and Daniel Heitz , of Rockford, Ill.;
10 grandchildren, Dr. Lynn H. Fuller, Thomas Fuller, Chad Heitz , Carrie Heitz , Cody Heitz , Kyle Heitz , Stephanie Heitz , Lauren Heitz , Courtney Heitz and Curtis Heitz ; a sister, Anna Mae LeConte; a brother, Bruce (Mary Lou) Heitz ; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Richard LeConte.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Carl's name may be donated to the Key West Fire Department.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Hermann, Tony Heiar, the staff at Dubuque Internal Medicine and Dr. Brian Link at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for all the care and kindness they gave to Carl.
