Sequim resident Richard "Shorty" Duane Hansell died in Port Angeles at age 69.
He was born in Fairfield, Idaho, to Richard and Gladys (Chandler) Hansell and lived on a small farm until the age of 10, when he moved to Lebanon, Ore.
During the Depression, he earned money by operating a shoeshine stand, collecting pop bottles for return and delivering newspapers. At 17, he falsified his age and joined the Navy, where he served in the Korean War.
After discharge from active duty, Mr. Hansell stayed in Hawaii for six years, during which time he helped form Hawaii's first bikers' club and appeared briefly in the movie "From Here to Eternity," driving a Harley off a pier.
In 1956, he returned to the mainland and in 1957 married. His daughter was born in 1958.
Mr. Hansell's interests included photography and sports, including water skiing, fishing and driving race cars. He was also a professional bowler and a member of the American Bowling Congress.
At various times during the next 36 years, Mr. Hansell was employed as a bowling instructor, truck driver, bus driver and tavern owner.
In 1986, he moved to Sequim to care for his mother.
Mr. Hansell 's survivors include his daughter, Tracy M. Hansell, and mother, Gladys Youell, both of Sequim; brother and sister-in-law Lyall and June Hansell and sister Alice Davis, all of Southern California; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
