Craig Allen McMahan died Sunday, August 6th in Rockport, Texas, from heart failure related to Parkinson's disease. He was 73. "Pepper" McMahan was a wildlife biologist and conservationist who made important contributions to land and habitat conservation in the state of Texas during his 28-year career with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The only child of Bernie and Marjorie McMahan, Craig was born in 1933 and grew up in and near Falfurrias, Texas. In 1944 the family moved to the Tepeguaje Ranch, eighteen miles from Falfurrias, where Marjorie was employed as a gatekeeper. It was during his adolescent years on the ranch that Craig began to develop an interest in the regional ecosystems that sustain Texas's plant and animal life. After graduating from Falfurrias High School, Craig served for four years in the United States Navy. He attended college on the G.I. Bill, graduating from California's Humboldt State University in 1959. For the next eight years Craig was employed as a field biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, working on the protection of waterfowl habitat in the Laguna Madre area and deer habitat in the Texas Hill Country. He went on to earn a Master of Science from New Mexico State University in 1969 and a PhD from Texas A & M University in 1973. He returned to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1973, taking a position in the Wildlife Division at TPWD's Austin headquarters. He served as Director of Programs and Planning for TPWD's Wildlife Division prior to his retirement in 1993.
Craig was a proud Texan, an uncompromising conservationist, a devoted son to his widowed mother, and a generous father to his only daughter. He loved Texas, beer, music, dancing, fishing, and Aggie football. Craig had a sardonic sense of humor and a sometimes melancholy temperament. His often irreverent attitude toward human society and behavior was countered by a reverent appreciation for the beauty and intelligence of the natural world. He is survived by his wife, Doris McMahan; one daughter, Hillary McMahan; and many acres of Texas land that he helped to protect.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Craig 's memory to the Nature Conservancy or the Parkin- son's Foundation.
A memorial service and picnic is planned for Sunday, August 27th, 6:30 p.m. at McKinney Falls State Park, southeast of Austin. Please contact hillarylmc@yahoo.com for details.
