Sina B Parrott, for 40 years the official toy buyer for The News-Sentinel's Empty Stocking Fund, died Tuesday. She was 91.
Ms. Parrott died of natural causes at the Cocke County Convalescent Center in Newport.
A home economics teacher with Knoxville City schools from 1924, Ms. Parrott became involved in the fund - which each Christmas distributes food and gifts to needy families in the Knoxville area - in 1943 when her principal at Christenberry Junior High School volunteered the services of Ms. Parrott's class to help repair dolls for the fund.
By the next year Ms. Parrott had become the official toy buyer for the.fund, a voluntary position she filled until her retirement in 1984. She retired from teaching in 1959.
"I had the great privilege of being in town a couple of times when she was doing the toy distribution," David Massey, Ms. Parrott's great-nephew said Wednesday. "She had that thing organized down to the most minute detail. She just cared a whole lot about children and she spent a good part of her year preparing for that day."
Ms. Parrott was the daughter of George M. and Nancy Lou Parrott. Her father was killed in the infamous New Market train wreck in September 1904. He was the Southern Railway engineer at the throttle when the train wrecked, killing 51 and injuring 106.
For her 35 years teaching and her role with the Empty Stocking Fund, Ms. Parrott in 1981 received the Downtown Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award.
Ms. Parrott was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and was also an auxiliary volunteer at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital, Massey said.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews in California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. today, Old Gray Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Carroll officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the East Tennessee Baptist Hospital Auxiliary.
Mann's Heritage Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
