Katherine L. McCarter, 80, a resident of Oak Ridge, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at her home.
Mrs. McCarter was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Jackson. She had lived in East Tennessee for the past 73 years.
She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, and a long-standing member of the Cove Road Primitive Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Elijah McCarter; parents, Barney Surels and Mildred Putman Surels; granddaughter, JoAnn Mayton; and great-grandson, Joseph Russell.
Mrs. McCarter is survived by daughters, Marilyn Stanley and husband, David Stanley, MD, of Oak Ridge, Mary Thomas of Clinton, Betty Russell and Dallas Rapier of Oliver Springs, Julie Sizemore and husband, Mike, of Strawberry Plains, Connie Ray of Oak Ridge, Esther Owenby and husband, Herman, of Sevierville, and Angela Thacker and husband, Brian, of Oak Ridge; son, Gary Mc-Carter and wife, Beth, of Knoxville; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by a sister, Christine "Nesha" Gregg of Oak Ridge; brother, John Surels and wife, Norma, of Elizabethtown, Tenn.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Thomas Vananda and the Rev. Gary Massengill officiating.
Burial and graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 8, 2011, at the Indian Creek Cemetery.
The family expresses their gratitude to Amedisys and especially to nurses, Fran and Angela.
