Knoxville insurance executive's home searched in Roane murder probe
By Bob Fowler
A Knox County insurance executive who allegedly repeatedly threatened to kill a young paramour is a "person of interest" in the shooting death of the 23-year-old Powell woman, authorities said Tuesday.
Brooke Nicole Morris's body was found on a rural Roane County road Saturday evening. She had been shot three times, Roane County District Attorney General Russell Johnson said.
Officials on Sunday executed a search warrant on Shawn Smoot's Gettysvue Way residence, looking for evidence in connection with the slaying.
"He is definitely the person getting the most attention," Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton said Tuesday of Smoot. Johnson hesitated to describe Smoot as a suspect but called him a "person of interest."
Smoot is an Allstate Insurance agent and operates the Shawn Smoot Agency near the corner of Kingston Pike and Lovell Road. Efforts to contact him for comment — both at his office and home — were unsuccessful Tuesday.
An order of protection that Morris filed against Smoot last winter in Knox County Fourth Circuit Court led authorities to focus on Smoot, Johnson said.
In that order, Morris calls Smoot her "ex-boyfriend and boss" and describes incidents in November where Smoot twice attacked her, once ripping her sweater and bra off while they were in his truck.
"He told me he would kill me if I told his wife he was cheating on her," Morris wrote in the order of protection.
Morris stated that on Jan. 5 while Smoot was in her home, "Shawn strangled me with his hands around my neck until I became light-headed and could not breathe."
"Shawn is out of control and violent," the order states. Morris wrote that Smoot's wife learned about their affair. "Shawn told me he had been looking into if he killed me, he would plead temporary insanity because I broke up his marriage. Shawn said he would only get 5 or 6 years in prison,"
Sheriff Stockton said items found in Smoot's residence during Sunday's lengthy search were sent to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation crime laboratory.
Also taken for analysis: Smoot's vehicle and Morris's car. Her vehicle was found over the weekend near Altruda's Restaurant in The Commons Shopping Center at the corner of North Peters Road and Kingston Pike, Johnson said.
Two motorists called 911 at 8:06 p.m. Saturday to report seeing a fully clothed woman's body in the road at the intersection of Blair and Old Blair roads in the Dyllis community.
The body was taken to the Regional Forensic Center in Knoxville for an autopsy.
The district attorney said evidence at the scene "indicates that she was shot there," and the slaying occurred shortly before the body was found.
