DONAHUE, BESS DYER - formerly of Knoxville, died October 4, 2004, in Jacksonville, Florida, where she had lived since 1990. Born September 28, 1903, she lived 6 days beyond her 101st birthday. The daughter of Lon F. and Lillie E. Dyer, she was born and raised near Luttrell in Union County. At the age of 15, she joined Warwick's Chapel Baptist Church, where she was an active member for many years. In 1928, she married Everett L. Donahue, a long-time employee of Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company. In 1945, the family moved to Orlando Street in North Knoxville where Mrs. Donahue lived for 45 years. Mr. Donahue died in 1978 just months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Donahue was a member of Broadway Baptist Church for 50 years and was its oldest member. She was active in Sunday School and in Woman's Missionary Union programs for many years, and she was a member of the Birthday Club. A homemaker, she was especially skilled in sewing, quilting, and needlework. She loved flowers, birds, animals, and eating out at her favorite restaurants. Blessed with a keen memory, she delighted in family history and storytelling. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by: her parents her brothers, Vaughn W. Dyer of Knoxville, and Delmar E. Dyer of Luttrell nephew, Gregory Gray of Knoxville and son-in-law, Lester Price Seaton of Jacksonville, formerly of Knoxville and Maryville. She is survived by: her daughters, Betty L. Donahue of Alexandria, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida, and Lonette D. Seaton of Jacksonville brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Horace J. and Imogene Dyer of Luttrell sister-in-law, Alma M. Dyer of Knoxville nieces and nephews, Mickie Dyer DeVault of Luttrell, Beth DeVault Edmondson and sons, Tucker and Andrew, Laura DeVault Tolliver and daughter, Raley, all of Maynardville, Eddie Dyer of Wartburg, and Herba M. Gray of Knoxville and son, David of Nashville. Also surviving are her beloved kitties, Katie, Tommy, and Cleo. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mrs. Donahue 's name may be made to The Everett L. and Bess Dyer Donahue Endowed Scholarship at Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee, 37760, Broadway Baptist Church, 815 Broadway NE, Knoxville, Tennessee 37917, or the charity of your choice. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery for a 10:00 a.m. graveside service and interment with Rev. Horace J. Dyer and Rev. Tim Bounds officiating.
