Dean Matthews , age 85, of Hot Springs, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009. He was born on May 8, 1923, at Clover Bend, to Arthur Matthews and Esther Huskey Matthews . He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Betty Jo Matthews ; one brother, Bernard Matthews ; and one sister, Ina Carrell. He was a member of the Hot Springs First Baptist Church, South Hot Springs Lions Club life member and Past President. He was also a 50-plus-year member and 33rd Degree Mason. He was a retired insurance agent/arranger from Arkansas National Company. He was a graduate of Clover Bend Schools and Arkansas Tech University. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Dean Matthews (Gena), of Shreveport, La.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Jane Matthews , of Hot Springs, and Pam Myers (Chuck), of Jacksonville; two grandsons, Jeremy Myers (Lea), of Arkadelphia, and Sloan Matthews , of Shreveport, La.; two granddaughters, Desha Kyzer (Steven), of Cabot, and Mary Allison Matthews , of Shreveport, La.; three great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Chase Kyzer, both of Cabot, and Asher Myers, of Arkadelphia; and many nieces, nephews; and a host of friends. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home chapel, Hot Springs, with the Rev. Roy McLeod officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hot Springs, under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Hot Springs. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Friday, prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Danny Matthews , Tommy Matthews , Cary Matthews , Garry Campbell, Vernon Speers and Richard Holzer Jr. Honorary pallbearers are John Stewart, John New and members of the South Hot Springs Lions Club.
