Walter Runyan Steele, age 91, passed away Friday, July 22 at the home of his son in Eagle. Walter was born Nov. 6, 1913 in Lovell, Wyo. He was raised in Carrolls, Wash. and later moved to Kuna, where he graduated from Kuna High School. He married Lillie May Hoagland April 25, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Swan Falls, Idaho, where he worked as a technician for the Idaho Power Company. They later moved to Caldwell and then settled in Boise, where they lived out their lives together and raised their family of 12 children. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has served as a scoutmaster, ward clerk and a stake and ward missionary. After retirement from the power company, he was called with his wife Lillie to the Jamaica Kingston mission as full-time missionaries. Walter had numerous talents and abilities which he shared and taught to his posterity. A favored hobby was raising honeybees and his work ethic could be compared to that of a worker bee. He taught his family to be "workers" with his example of gardening, preserving the harvest, building and working with wood, inventing useful and interesting tools, baling and hauling hay, raising animals and numerous other means from studying and reading to sewing and helping with housework. Walter had a talent for memorizing and writing poetry. Throughout his life, and in his final hours, he shared favorite poems with acquaintances and family, using them to teach moral lessons and to entertain grandchildren. Listeners enjoyed his "winding down" moments when he played his favorite tunes on the harmonica. Walter loved his family with all his heart. Some of his final words to his children were "I have lived a good life. All of my wishes have come true." He is survived by 11 of his children, 76 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, his sisters Winnie Weber and Betty Dippi, and brothers John Steele, Ray Vern Steele Jr. and William Steele. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillie, a son, Antone, and a sister, Zoreatha (Dolly) Wilson. Services will be held Tuesday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at the Eagle LDS Church, 2090 Eagle Rd. A viewing will be held Monday, July 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the same building and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral. Arrangements are under the direction of Zeyer Funeral Chapel, Nampa.
